Welcome to the World of
Sheryl Mixey LaLone

Welcome to my little corner of the world.

I’m glad you’re here. This site brings together the two creative paths I’ve been walking for a long time — my writing and my artwork.

My upcoming book, Shattered Trust, is really the heart of all this, and it’s the reason I finally decided to build a space where people could follow along as it comes to life.

You’ll also see some of my paintings.

They’re not meant to steal the spotlight, just to share another side of me and the way I process things. Sometimes words aren’t enough, and color steps in.

Feel free to explore, learn more about the book, or wander through the art. I hope you feel at home here.

Shattered Trust

My search for truth, healing, and accountability after childhood sexual abuse shattered my son’s life.

Learn More About Shattered Trust

I wrote Shattered Trust because my son’s story demanded it. When he died by suicide, I needed to understand the trauma he suffered at age seven and the silence that followed him for twenty‑eight years. That search opened a door I never expected — one that revealed how widespread child sexual abuse is, even in churches people assume are safe.

As I began talking about what happened to my son, friends and fellow Seventh‑day Adventist members quietly shared their own experiences. I hadn’t set out to examine the church, but the more I listened, the more I realized how much people didn’t know — and how much they needed to.

The truth is simple and devastating: one out of every 3 to 5 girls and one out of every 5 to 7 boys are sexually abused before age eighteen. No congregation is exempt. Many parents and leaders don’t recognize the signs, don’t know how to talk to children, and don’t know how to respond when a child finally speaks.

I couldn’t find a single Adventist‑specific book on this topic at the Adventist Book Center. So I wrote one. This book explains what child sexual abuse is, how it happens, how to talk to children at every age, how to respond when it’s disclosed, and what churches can do to protect the vulnerable.

It also deals honestly with the spiritual struggle that comes with this kind of trauma. I wrestled with God. I asked hard questions. Scripture became the place where I found the words I needed — and the words I believe other parents need too.

I’ve also created a companion workbook with simple recall questions, discussion prompts, and reflection exercises to help families and churches process what they’ve learned and start the conversations that matter.

Writing this book has been gut‑wrenching. Reading it may be difficult. But I feel an urgency I cannot ignore: our children are at risk, and silence is part of the problem.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more. I’ll share updates here as the publication moves forward.

Sheryl Mixey-LaLone

Sheryl Mixey‑LaLone is a mother, researcher, and advocate whose life was forever changed by the loss of her son — a loss rooted in childhood sexual abuse that began when he was seven years old. For years, she carried questions no parent ever expects to face. After his death by suicide, she began searching for answers, determined to understand how early trauma shaped his entire life and why the warning signs were so often missed.

That search became a years‑long investigation into child sexual abuse, trauma, church culture, and the lifelong impact of silence. Her upcoming book, Shattered Trust, is the result of that journey — a deeply personal and meticulously researched work written to help parents, churches, and communities recognize abuse, respond with courage, and protect children before it is too late.

Sheryl writes with the heart of a mother and the clarity of someone who has walked through the darkest parts of this subject. Her mission is simple and urgent: break the silence, end the harm, and save the children who still need a voice.

Alongside her writing, Sheryl is also a landscape painter. Her artwork — peaceful mountains, quiet skies, and scenes filled with light — has been a grounding and healing part of her life. Many readers appreciate the balance her art brings to the difficult subject matter she writes about, and her paintings can be viewed in the Art Gallery section of this site.

Sheryl lives in Tennessee, where she continues her advocacy work, her writing, and her art, hoping that her son’s story will help protect other children and bring understanding to families who are searching for answers of their

own.

A Note About the Art

This gallery is simply a small window into my creative life. While my book is the heart of this website—and still on its way—these paintings offer a quiet companion to it. They’re not here to take center stage, only to add a bit of color and reflection along the journey.

I hope you enjoy them as a gentle side path while the main story continues to unfold.
